PERCUSSION CONCERTO
“Percussion has always been my first love in the musical world. The quartet was exciting, but taking it to the level of a full concerto was another thing altogether. A huge challenge.” —Elfman
Currie is one of today’s premiere percussionists, and it’s no wonder that Elfman wanted to write the work for him. The work needs a soloist with the agility to move quickly among the instruments that are positioned on either side of the conductor’s podium. At Friday’s concert, Currie handled the logistics with ease and gave a tour de force performance of the 30-minute work, which provided a showcase for his remarkable sense of rhythm as well as his sensitivity in expressing moods and emotions. - Edward Reichel, Utah Arts Review

Plus, the amazing Colin Currie, former artist-in-residence and audience favorite, raises the roof in the Concerto composed for him.

Fantasia Festival
The Nightmare Before Christmas & Bullet Time
Directed by Henry Selick
Screening preceded by presentation of the Cheval Noir Career Award to Danny Elfman and World Premiere of BULLET TIME
It’s Christmas, and Halloween, in July! A very special evening at Fantasia with genre cinema’s most celebrated film score composer, Danny Elfman, includes the presentation of a Career Achievement Award, the world premiere of Eddie Alcazar’s wild animated short film BULLET TIME (scored by Elfman, of course), and a rare cinema screening of the kooky, spooky stop-motion musical masterpiece that remains beloved around the world, over three decades after its release. Conceived by Elfman’s regular collaborator Tim Burton, 1993’s THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS marked the feature directorial debut of stop-motion master Henry Selick (CORALINE), and Danny Elfman provided not only the score but the singing voice of Jack Skellington. Trick or treat, naughty or nice, the Pumpkin King welcomes you all! – Runia Morrisberg

Danny Elfman – famous for his many award winning scores for Hollywood (including Batman) – shines in a beautiful mallet quartet and Julia Wolfe translates the pulse of down-town Manhattan into a tour de force for 4 drum-sets.
